Oregon Employment Guide

If you live in Oregon, then Oregon employment is something that you should take very seriously. The health of the state depends on it.

You might ask, why is having a low unemployment rate so important to oregonians? Well, the reason is that this state collects income tax and relies on the source of revenue for their well being. This means that when the economy is slumping, it becomes more difficult for the state to be able to manage their funds. What makes it even more difficult is that planning is done the previous year, so if there is a sudden change in unemployement, then it can cause a ripple affect that the state has to play catch up on.

Working in Oregon comes with many perks. If you live in the Willamette Vally, you are only about an hour away from the mountains, skiing, snowboarding, and climbing. You are only an hour away from the ocean, boating, fishing, and beaches. All around you are Vineyards and Breweries. On your way to one of these quick destinations, you will pass by farmland. Rich beautiful farm land that is interspersed between the forests here. Oregon has something for everyone. Out in eastern Oregon are deserts. With all that is going on, Oregon State jobs are plentiful.

The Oregon Unemployment Department can be a great tool in searching for work. Many employers go to them to source their labor needs. Of course they aren’t the only place to look. Check in the Statesman Journal, The Register Guard, the Oregonian. All of these papers include sections on Oregon Employment.

Filing in Oregon is pretty easy. Simply go to imatchskills and fill our your job information. worksource oregon is another tool that is utilized in the collection of UI benefits. Filing taxes in Oregon can be a little tricky because we pay both the state and the federal government. Having to pay taxes to both entities generally sucks because it entails paying extra to have taxes filed.

Above I talked about some of the great recreational benefits of being employed in Oregon. For some, the perks are extended because they work in those fields. For others, those regional benefits are valued even more becuase they are tied down to a desk during the week. Programming jobs are prevalent in Oregon. The State produces a decent number of developers from CIS programs at UO, OSU, OIT, ITT, PSU, and many other universities as well. Oregon has a fairly large governmental presense in the valley. This translates into a lot of really safe jobs. The type of jobs that people could retire from one day if they decide to stick around long enough.

As a developer employed in Oregon, I find that there is a lot of temptation to go work for startups. the environment is simply more favorable. If you look on craigslist, it will be come evident that there are a lot of good developer jobs floating around.

At the beginning of this article, I discussed Why it is so important for Oregon Employment rate to be really low. I discussed the benefits of working in Oregon and all of the really neat recreational opportunities nearby. I also discussed some of the basics of filing in oregon and finding work both at the state level and throughout the state in smaller industries and last I discusses a little bit about the developer culture here in Oregon.
